More Info: Sherlockian Flash Mob in National Gallery Terrace, Trafalgar Square
We are planning a Sherlockian flash mob in National Gallery Terrace, Trafalgar Square on Saturday, April 21st at 2 o’clock. While it shall be a grand coming together of Sherlockians, it will also be in support of Save Undershaw and the Undershaw Preservation Trust’s battle to save the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from redevelopment. The UPT’s aim is to save the property so that it may be preserved for its historical and literary value and not cut up into blocks of flats, forever damaging it. The UPT has been collecting photos of supporters with Save Undershaw signs around the world, planning to send this photographs to national and international newspapers and shows to highlight the worldwide support of saving this property, and to shed light on the campaign. In this time of an all-out Holmesian renaissance, it is shameful that Undershaw has stood neglected and we are having to fight this fight at all.
WHEN: Saturday, April 21st. Participants should arrive no later than 1:45PM. Freeze starts at 2:00PM and stops at 2:05 PM.The freeze will start at the first strike of 2:00 by Big Ben. Curly will also blow a whistle in case Ben doesn’t feel like ringing. During the freeze, a few of us will take photographs and video. Everyone should strike a pose (nothing too lewd please, we want to present a positive image and this may get some attention and we want it to be the right sort!). Do not move during the freeze, so don’t stand like a flamingo doing the hokey pokey if you can’t hold it! The tourists will be confused and that will be glorious. If no one moves it’ll create a much larger impact. Selected people will have giant signs saying SAVE UNDERSHAW to hold up while everyone else is frozen. Those holding the boards will need to arrive at 1:30 so we can organize placements. There are 13 boards, so if you want to hold one, please specify so!WHERE: The National Gallery Terrace, Trafalgar Square, London. Tube: Charring Cross.WHY: Support of The Undershaw Preservation Trust and being totally awesome.DRESS: If possible, participants should wear/be holding something to do with Sherlock Holmes. Such as: deerstalker, top hat, bowler hat, pipe, magnifying glass, Sherlock Holmes t-shirts, cosplay, Victorian dress, homemade signs, banners, signs, pamphlets, anything! We want people to recognize the Sherlock Holmes aspect of this.NOTES: We want to get as many people as possible, so talk about this! It’s also why we’re hosting a full meet up around it! Even if you’re not in the Sherlock (Holmes) fandom or even if you’ve never heard of Undershaw, please come! The more people we have, the larger effect it’ll have. Just imagine if we have 100 people all decked out and suddenly we all stop. It’ll cause a stir and people will be curious. Flash mobs only work if there’s a lot of people, to tell your friends, family, and random strangers! At most it’ll take up 20 minutes of your day. That’s all. You’ll be part of something that’ll last much longer.
IMPORTANT: Please RSVP to this event. You can, of course, just show up on the day, but it’ll be great to have a number going in with. After the freeze ends, continue to mill about and make your way up to the people holding the signs (who will continue to do so even after the freeze ends). We will then take a group picture and make a group video screaming “SAVE UNDERSHAW!” and “WE BELIEVE IN SHERLOCK HOLMES!”After that people are free to wander off and enjoy their Saturday or come with us to enjoy the rest of the Sherlock Meet-Up with a pub quiz and dinner, etc.
We would like to thank you in advance for reading this, spreading the words, and being awesome. PLEASE spread this around as much as possible. This is for a very important cause, and as a Sherlockian it is vitally important. Without Sir Arthur Conan Doyle we wouldn’t have this amazing community we’re all a part of. We should honor him by saving the house he designed and wrote many Sherlock Holmes stories in, including The Return of Sherlock Holmes collection and the well loved Hound of the Baskervilles. If you can’t come to London, be there in spirit <3
