#221BeMine

So last night we tweeted about collecting Sherlockian Valentines under the hashtag #221BeMine (which comes from our theme song by  , get the compendium here »  )

We can make it John “Four Continents” Watson tonight, Valentine.

And it sort of… exploded. Which is awesome! Sue Vertue’s in particular was a killer XD (For those wondering how she found the hashtag, she follows us and we were RTing like a fiend, voila).

There’s hundreds that’ve been tweeted to us and a gazillion in the tag itself, so we’ll be making a masterpost of some of our favourite right here, updating as the day goes on. But feel free to reblog this and add your own Sherlockian Valentines!

And then these assholes…

JK we love you There’s TONS more, so explore the tag and make your own!

Write-Up for Asbury Pulp: Fact or Fiction on the Jersey Shore!

Hey lovely folks!

We got a fabulous (and very in-depth) write-up about the podcast and our general shenanigans on a new website. Here’s the linkage:

Introducing: the Baker Street Babes!

“He’s a high functioning sociopath on the BBC. A recovering drug addict on CBS. And a Steampunk super-hero on the big screen. He’s even been dead once – way back in ’91. Note, that’s 1891. The biggest mystery surrounding Sherlock Holmes these days is the amazing amount of life left in a character who first appeared on the scene in 1887 and in 2013 is, well, everywhere.

Why does Sherlock Holmes keep rising from the dead?

It must be for the babes.

The Baker Street Babes.

Taking their name from Mrs. Hudson’s famous 221 B address where Holmes and Watson found lodgings, the Baker Street Babes are a cross-Atlantic phenomenon in and of themselves. (London and New York are their hub cities.)  They are made up of young women in their mid-20s who dig the great detective – and have much to say about all things Sherlockian. They do that in a remarkable podcast they jointly produce – and which Asbury Pulp is now pleased to share with the Jersey Shore (at the bottom of this page).”

As for our new friends:

“Asbury Pulp begins where the sidewalks start and ends where the high-end meet the down-low at the water’s edge. Its reporters and writers believe this dynamic borderland is best expressed through an eclectic mix of editorial, audio and visual stories served with a sense of style and humor. We cover culture with a vengeance to produce Asbury PulpFact and Fiction on the Jersey Shore.

We welcome submissions. E-mail news, events or story leads to asburypulp@gmail.com. Feel free to attach some eye-catching photos, artwork or even a song or video. With a tip of the hat to the great pulp magazines of the 20th century like Black Mask and Dime Detective, Asbury Pulp will also feature local fiction and serial stories to capture the true grit and glitz of this wild region of the U.S.A.”

I Survived Shreffgate And All I Got Was This Text Post

Do not underestimate the power of the internet. Respect it. Respect us.

The past week has been insane. Ever since The Rant, things have been going at a crazy pace and it’s been difficult to keep up. First the article appeared and then evidence that he’s done this before, that he was actually pro-youngsters at one point (circa 1960s, granted), and that his partners-in-crime were writing nasty things about us too. Support came from everywhere. From very important and very distinguished BSI members,  from other society and scion members, from scholars and media personalities, from old friends, new friends, and from you all: the internet.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Shreffgate gained us not only 500 new followers over twitter, tumblr, and facebook overnight, but that we’ve received hundreds and hundreds of comments, messages, emails, and phone calls of worry and support from all over the world. It’s been insane and overwhelming and amazing. To everyone who has asked us to read their rebuttals and comments, we’re getting there, there’s seriously hundreds of them! And you’re all just so articulate and amazing. Who could ever doubt you? Those who don’t really pay attention, that’s who. Not very becoming of a Sherlockian, hm?

There comes a point when you actually don’t know how to deal with that much love, hence why I’ve (Curly) been a little quiet the past two or three days. I’m slowly making my way through messages, and I know Lyndsay and Maria (who have both written amazing pieces) feel much the same way, as do all us Babes and everyone else who was attacked by that piece of wankery. The pride and the love from you all is the most inspiring thing. Oh if you could read what some of the traditional Sherlockians write about you, the really AMAZING things. Maybe I’ll put together some bits and pieces for you all, because many brought tears to my eyes. 99% of the Sherlockian world love us all. They adore fandom. They’re so excited about it. We’re personally drowning in love, and you are all too, you may just not know it. It’s flushed out the hatred of Phillip Shreffler and his Looney Toon gang of elitist snobs.

Shreffler is apparently shaking in his boots. He has lost the respect of many of his friends and peers, and is maybe… possibly… perhaps (not likely?), re-evaluating his words. Frankly, at this point, I don’t care, because his chapter is over.

So thank you. From the bottom of my heart, from all The Babes, from all the women (and men) who are part of fandom and have been affected by this. Thank you. So much.

We have a new look to our website! And it’s expanded!!
www.bakerstreetbabes.com
We now have separate sections for our articles (btw we totally accept guest blogs!) and reviews, a whole new Events page, and now a Fandom page. The Fandom page isn’t up and running yet, but once it is, it’ll highlight our favourite posts/gifs/manips/videos/etc from tumblr and beyond. Sort of a more condensed version of tumblr for those who maybe don’t have one or just want a taste. Permission will always be asked first.
Definitely check out the Events page though. We’ll be adding to is, as not nearly everything is on there, but there’s a taste and has all the links to photos, videos, and media. Did we miss something? Please email us (see: contact) and let us know!
As always, thank you for all of your support, especially recently. We love what we do and we love all of you and his magnificent fandom.

SHAM 2013

chess-ka:

Yesterday was the Sherlock Holmes Annual Meet-up in London, and it was awesome to go along for the third year running and hang out with some amazing fans.

We met up at 11 near Embankment, where we started a guided walk with the awesome Richard IV. It was really, really interesting and generally excellent and if you’re ever in London then you should definitely go on a Holmes walk. Check here!

The man himself. He’s excellent at dealing with fangirls,I have to say.

Photos of the walk under the cut :)

——————-

We’re getting scientific this episode with Mastermind author and psychologist Maria Konnikova! Delving into the psychology of Sherlock Holmes, we learn all about the brain attic, mindfulness, and whether Holmes has Aspergers or is even a sociopath at all. A really fun and incredibly informative episode wherein you’ll learn oodles and laugh just as much. Maria is joined by Babes Curly, Lyndsay, Kafers, Amy, Sarah, Ardy, and newcomer Melinda!

Plus, there’s a goodie at the end.

Maria’s first book, Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, forthcoming from Viking/Penguin in January 2013, was inspired by her “Lessons from Sherlock Holmes” series for Scientific American and follows the legendary detective as he explores the workings of the human mind. It is guided by a central premise: that Sherlock Holmes serves as a near-ideal window into the psychology of how we think and is a rare teacher of how to think better than we naturally do. While those who read the book may not become master detectives, they will certainly learn more about themselves, their minds, and their capabilities, and in so doing, will come closer to the Sherlockian ideal of a thinker who knows how to observe, not merely see, the world around him.

Maria is currently working on an assortment of non-fiction and fiction projects. Her first book, Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, will be published by Viking on January 3, 2013. She writes the weekly “Literally Psyched” column for Scientific American, where she explores the intersection of literature and psychology, and formerly wrote the popular psychology blog “Artful Choice” for Big Think. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, Slate, The New Republic, The Paris Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Observer, Scientific American MIND, and Scientific American, among other publications. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where she studied psychology, creative writing, and government, and is currently a doctoral candidate in Psychology at Columbia University. Before returning to school, she worked as a producer for the Charlie Rose show on PBS.

You can find her on twitter at @mkonnikova and at her website www.mariakonnikova.com

MASTERMIND is now available at IndieboundBarnes & Noble, and Amazon.
