The One Fixed Point In A Changing Age: Essays on Sherlockiana By Online Fandom is, not surprisingly, a collection of essays written exclusively by members of the tumblr and internet fandom of Sherlock Holmes. These essays will be compiled into a book and will be published, giving a voice and the beginnings of a body of work for the younger generation of Holmes fans. The idea was conceived by The Baker Street Babes and it will be published by Wessex Press.

There is a massive amount of talent in the tumblr Sherlockian universe and we have seen and read some amazing essays and debates about not only the show, but the canon and beyond. In discussions with some more established Holmesians, it was said that there was no concrete “body of work” for our generation of Holmes fans, despite that it is all online. We toyed with the idea of just making a giant pdf, but instead  we had an idea of making a collection of essays into a book. It would be on any and everything Sherlock Holmes and the contributions would come specifically from the new fandom. We think this would be really good to prove that we are more than just “silly fans”, and that we can be just as scholarly as the big boys. It would be fantastic to showcase some of the amazing things we’ve already read, but also invite others who would like to submit their own essays and articles.

So this is YOUR invitation! Have an essay sitting on your hard drive you want to dust off? Had an idea for ages but couldn’t get the gumption to start writing? Want to be published? Well here’s your chance!

Odd Fanart Request: Would suit odd fanartist

trillsabells:

Would it be possible for someone to draw me a Sherlockian Number 5.

So a number 5 made up of various props or with characters leaning against it, maybe lounging along the straight bit while the glow in the dark bunny hides under the curve, something, anything.

And preferably could it be no taller than 22 cm and no wider than 12 cm or at least fit, stretch to, or shrink to that space?

I can promise you this picture would be for my own personal use only and would not see the light of day - unless you wanted to show it around in the light of day of course, it’s your picture.

I know it’s an odd request and I can explain if you want but I would be really really really grateful if someone, anyone, could draw me a Sherlockian number 5.

Anyone able to help her out?

A Love Letter to *All* Sherlockians

fridafrag:

When I first read Phillip Shreffler’s degrading essay on the “differences” between Sherlockian “devotees” and Sherlockian “fans”, I was tempted to write a snarky, bitter reply to him - to publicly denounce him on his elitist, ageist, and sexist notions, and tear apart his argument limb by limb to show how it simply cannot stand as a valid argument.

Then I realized that he probably didn’t gives two shits about my opinions. Not only am I a self-identified fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories and of subsequent film and television incarnations, I am also under the age of 45, have a vagina, and happen to admire Benedict Cumberbatch’s acting skills. I also haven’t yet had the chance to pore over every original story and every copy of the Baker Street Journal as, Mr. Shreffler implies, I should do if I would like to be considered by white, middle class, educated people (primarily men, by the looks of it) as a legitimate “devotee” to the works of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Still, the temptation to be bitter and resentful was strong. I started writing a really nasty reply. But about halfway through, I decided that I didn’t want to spend all that energy in being angry. Others here on Tumblr have expressed my own anger so well in their reactions to the article, and I wouldn’t be able to provide better arguments.

So, instead, I spent my energy writing a love letter to all Sherlockians.

If you are not sure if this applies to you, answer this question:

Do you love Sherlock Holmes?

If yes, you’re a “real” Sherlockian.

And this is for you.

A beautiful letter to all Sherlockians that you should definitely read.

You know what’s bullshit? Being told, because you’re a young girl, that you can’t be a “serious Sherlockian.”

Because that is utter bullshit. Just read that this happened to a friend and it’s happened to me on numerous occasions. You want to be a Sherlockian? Like Sherlock Holmes. That’s it.

We really try to champion getting the internet fandom and the traditional Sherlockians to hang together. Most people are lovely and excited about the new generation. But there’s some people who think they’re better than us, you, anyone who maybe doesn’t know the canon backwards and forwards. I touched on this in my speech & later BSJ article on the Validation of Fandom, and it’s a message we, as The Babes are really fighting. There’s nothing worse than going to a meeting or an event and being told you can’t possibly be a serious Sherlockians because you’re a twenty-something girl who liked Benedict Cumberbatch. Because that’s what happened to me. I, terrified, went to a conference and was dismissed. I’ve gotten mail from people I don’t even know saying what we’re doing as the Babes is just silliness. Now a friend has been told she’s not a serious Sherlockian?

What the hell makes a serious Sherlockian? I’d love to know, because frankly, running around in a deerstalker and writing essays as if a fictional character was real sure doesn’t make you one mister.

The fact I got invited to the BSI Dinner this year was huge (and even then there were complaints), but for some it’ll never be enough. We’re editing this essay collection to prove to these elitists that yes, we can be silly and have fun, but we’re just as intelligent and have just as many thoughts about Sherlock Holmes as they do. We are just as passionate. This is not to say all traditional Sherlockians are like that. Not in the slightest. The vast majority are the sweetest and most welcoming people I’ve ever met. I was instantly championed by many important people in the Sherlockian world and during all of BSI Weekend I was just inundated with love and excitement. They WANT new people to come to their meetings and events. They want to talk with you and laugh with you. God, they really do want that. Find your local scion and go there! The Sherlockian world is 90% love. It’s that nasty 10% that still makes you feel, as a woman, especially a young woman, that you’re just a poser. No matter how much you love the material. And that’s not fair.

To steal from BSB Lyndsay’s facebook status at the moment: “Okay, here’s how it works…you want to be a “real” Sherlockian? Like Sherlock Holmes. Nope. That’s it. Canon, Rathbone, Brett, Cumberbatch, Downey. The ONLY criteria is that you enjoy the subject. That is all, and this has been a PSA.”

The happy discussion of minor details of Holmesiana

suidas:

“One of the blissful ways of passing an evening, when you encounter another dyed-in-the-blood addict, is to embark on the happy discussion of minor details of Holmesiana. “Whose gold watch was it that had been so mishandled?” one may ask; and the other counters with “What was the book that Joseph Stangerson carried in his pocket?” Endless delicious minutiae to consider! […]Or there are the glimpses of Moriarty to be talked over: his youthful treatise on the binomial theorem “which had a European vogue”. Or Mycroft Holmes, seven years older than Sherlock: we would gladly have heard more of him and of the Diogenes Club. How was it that Dr. Watson happened to cherish a portrait of Henry Ward Beecher, but never had it framed? Or we might air a minor grievance that the devoted Mrs. Hudson had never been implicated in a mystery of her own. There was a mystery about a landlady, but a certain Mrs. Warren was brought in for the purpose. And why did Gregson and Lestrade gradually fade out of the picture? Why does Billy the page boy remain only a phantom? Holmes speaks once of being at college: what college was it? And Dr. Watson’s wound from the “Jezail bullet”: was it in his shoulder or his leg: apparently Sir Arthur was not quite sure.”
